Camera traps are back out again on the North York Moors looking for elusive pine marten, as part of NatureSpy’s Yorkshire Pine Marten Project.

With the help of some fantastic volunteers, several camera traps were set up in a secret area of Forestry Commission woodland in the heart of the Moors. The camera traps will be collected in a few weeks time and the footage reviewed, before the cameras are again moved on to another new site.

This continues NatureSpy’s work on the Moors and this project, which began in mid-2013. Last year saw cameras out in more than 6 different areas of Forestry Commission forests for the majority of the year, capturing a wealth of wildlife – but no pine marten…

NatureSpy have also been buoyed by the efforts of Stuart Edmunds of Shropshire Mammal Group recently paying dividends and uncovering a small population of martens on the Shropshire-Powys border, after 5 years of searching.

This remains the only project dedicated to conclusively proving the presence of pine marten in Yorkshire. NatureSpy are grateful for the ongoing support and cooperation of the Forestry Commission in the North York Moors.
