Wilder International

Providing support where animal welfare meets conservation.

Wilder International is a UK-based non-profit that provides expert support to wildlife conservation efforts around the world, with a focus on animal care, management and wildlife health.

Working in collaboration with a diverse range of partners, Wilder International delivers hands-on veterinary care, technical advice and training to improve outcomes for wildlife in conservation, rehabilitation and rewilding contexts. Their work spans multiple continents and species - from working on rewilding initiatives in the UK, to contributing to numbat conservation in Australia and supporting primate welfare in Indonesia.

Wilder International’s team brings decades of practical experience in conservation and animal management to the organisations they support, building local capacity and driving long-term impact for wildlife. NatureSpy is proud to support Wilder International’s work by providing trail cameras and technical support to enhance wildlife monitoring across their partnerships.

Who's involved

Trail Cameras In Action

Wilder International provides essential support, advice and training to sanctuaries, rescue centres and conservation organisations working at the intersection of animal welfare and wildlife conservation. Part of this support includes the use of trail cameras across their range of partnerships, helping to monitor wild and rehabilitated animals.

At one rewilding site in the UK, 8,000 images have been captured, identifying over 50 species in just one year! This important monitoring work has led to two new records of a polecat and a weasel in the area, as well as important new evidence of invasive species, the American mink.

The camera data is now being used to inform future conservation work, catalysing partnerships across wildlife trusts in the region, with a particular focus on creating reintroduction habitat for water voles.

Current examples of trail camera use by project partners include:

- Monitoring of previously undocumented gorilla, chimp and bonobo populations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

- Supporting barn owl populations by using camera data to inform on habitat and artificial roosting locations.

- Assessing reptile and amphibian populations in a conservation corridor in the UK.

With a rotating number of cameras being deployed across a range of projects, the data they collect is ever changing - leaving the team in anticipation for what they’ll see next.

Nocturnal Activity

Trail cameras can be an invaluable tool for monitoring the welfare of animals that are active during the night, like this rescued moon bear being looked after by Wilder International’s project partner, Animals Asia.

Whilst they can be active during the day as seen in this photo, they are primarily nocturnal feeders. Monitoring their behaviour at night allows the team to ensure the animals are well cared for, addressing any needs that may go unnoticed during the day.

How NatureSpy Are Supporting

Each of Wilder International’s initiatives has specific wildlife monitoring needs - from tracking released animals in the wild to observing rescued animals in sanctuary settings. To meet these varied requirements, we’ve supplied a combination of the following trail cameras: NatureSpy Helarctos Solar, NatureSpy Ursus and Browning Spec Ops Elite HP5.

This tailored approach ensures that Wilder International and their partners can gather the data they need on animal behaviour, habitat use and welfare. Alongside the equipment, we also provide technical guidance to help achieve the best results from these cameras in different environments.
