FAQs

Questions, questions - our team handle hundreds of questions every week from our wildlife-loving customers. Here you'll find some of the most common, so you can get back to the wildlife.

Modern Macs can play most video formats. However, if you're having issues, we recommend one of the most popular video players in the world, VLC Player. Its free and easy to use - download for Mac here and for Windows here.

Most cameras will record in MP4 format which will play natively on a Mac computer.

Generally, the cameras are not designed for indoor use – although they will work. They will not work however through glass due to how PIR sensors operate.

A good quality camera trap can withstand and work well in temperature extremes such as rain, sleet, snow, hail, storms, ice etc. While they are weatherproof they are NOT waterproof. They must not be submerged underwater, so do take care when placing a camera near any body of water.

Trail camera positioning can make or break your camera trapping efforts, so take a look at our article on camera placement to make sure you have your camera positioned correctly.

We offer some replacement parts for NatureSpy, Ltl Acorn, Browning and Bushnell cameras. Let us know what you need and we’ll do our best to get hold of it quickly.

NatureSpy cameras have a 1 or 2 year warranty - check the individual product specs.

Browning cameras have a 2 year warranty.

Bushnell cameras have a 2 year warranty.

SpyPoint cameras have a 2 year warranty.

Reconyx cameras have a 5 year warranty.

Ltl Acorn cameras all come with a 1 year warranty.

Generally, we recommend low glow LEDs for wildlife use as they will give a much better invisible IR flash range, and therefore a brighter image/video, and therefore allow better definition.

However, there is the potential that they will disturb wildlife to some degree (though research suggests most mammals see low-glow and no-glow the same way), and can also alert humans.

If you plan to use a camera trap for security purposes, you should chose a camera with no-glow LEDs.

We fully appreciate that it can be a little tricky to know what the best wildlife camera for you, with the choice available these days.

NatureSpy specialise in only the tried and tested cameras that we know deliver results.

Our specially designed camera trap chooser helps you whittle down the choice to what’s important for you – ensuring you get the right wildlife camera for your needs.

It depends on how long you want to leave your trail camera without checking it, and how active you expect the camera to be.

If you are checking the camera every week then a 32GB SD card should be more than enough, however if you want to leave the camera for a few weeks at a time, then a 64GB or 128GB card would be a better choice.

Many of our cameras are provided with free SD cards – take a look at the product information to see if your chosen camera does.

Our preferred batteries for any camera are Lithium AAs. They have a much higher current and are impervious to the cold temperatures in winter. Energizer Ultimate Lithium and Varta Professional Lithium are the best to use.

The Ursus, Reconyx and some of the Browning cameras (see product Tech Specs) can use rechargeable batteries that have a capacity of at least 2500mAh. These work great, but for extremely cold conditions or situations where recharging the batteries is not feasible, we suggest opting for Lithium batteries. The best rechargeable you can use are Eneloop Pro.

We strongly recommend that you avoid Duracell batteries and cheap alkaline batteries (i.e. ones that say ‘Extra Long Life’ on the packet) – their technology can mean that you get little life and performance out of them.

As a general rule, cheap alkaline or zinc batteries will not give you much success!

Generally speaking, you can use rechargeable batteries, although they will only last approx. 1-2 months under normal usage rather than 6-9* months regular lithium batteries can give. Some cameras however will struggle or not work on rechargeable batteries.

They also dislike the cold more than other batteries too so tend not to work as well.

Bear in mind that few cameras can officially run off rechargeable – the lower voltage (1.2V) means you will see a performance dip and the camera may not work fully. The battery meter will also never show full, or 100%.

Only the Ursus, Browning Elite HP5, Pro X 1080, Camojojo Trace and Reconyx HyperFire cameras can officially run off rechargeable batteries currently.

It is vital that your rechargeable batteries have a current rating of least 2500mAh, otherwise they will not work. We only recommend Panasonic Eneloop Pro.

Troubleshooting & tips

Troubleshooting & tips

Having success with your camera trap takes times and patience. Animals are unpredictable. Take a look at our article on camera placement to make sure you have your camera positioned correctly.

Our Support Hub has lots of free resources on settings, placement and common mistakes to help you perfect your camera trapping technique!

A camera trap recording well during the day but not at night is the first sign of the batteries starting to fail.

Night-time triggers require much more power from the batteries due to the IR LEDs – a camera that can’t record at night is usually because there isn’t enough juice left in the batteries.

We also see this most often with Duracell batteries. Occasionally, the camera will show ’empty files’, files that area initially created when the camera triggers, but the camera then turns off immediately due to low power and just leave the empty file.

Replacing the batteries (but not with Duracell!) will solve this issue.

If your camera isn't working as expected, firstly, fit fresh, preferably lithium, batteries. If your camera has internal rechargeable batteries, recharge these fully. Most problems are usually down to almost-flat batteries. If this doesn’t solve the problem, tell us as soon as possible. We will then troubleshoot and advise on the next steps.
